TriSys ASP - Exchange E-Mail Server

The TriSys ASP service has always provided end-user e-mail managements through Microsoft Outlook. Most users understand that Outlook normally connects to a specified ISP (Internet service provider) in order to download e-mail from a POP3 (post-office protocol version 3) mailbox into PST (Personal [information] Store) files. The Outlook PST files can grow very large and therefore can become corrupt and also the performance of Outlook reduces accordingly.

In order to remove the risk of corruption and improve the performance of Outlook for our ASP subscribers, we operate and manage redundant Microsoft Exchange E-Mail servers (TriSys-EXC-01 in Cambridge and TriSys-EXC-D01, TriSys-EXC-D02 & TriSys-EXC-D03 in Reading) mirrored between our data centres in Cambridge and Reading. Outlook is used to connect directly to the Exchange servers. This turns TriSys ASP E-Mail into a client-server mechanism in keeping with the traditional client-server design of TriSys.

There are also some additional benefits which derive from the use of Exchange E-Mail:

• Outlook will not lock up due to PST file locking

• Outlook cannot corrupt e-mail due to excessive PST growth

• The TriSys ASP service will become more efficient thus improving system response at peak times (11am & 2pm)

• ASP customers will be able to access e-mail through a web browser interface (Outlook Web Access [OWA]) without logging into TriSys ASP through terminal services

• Using the web browser interface, customers can effectively access e-mail from handheld devices such as PDA's & telephones using GPRS (general packet radio service) or 3G (third generation telephony)

• ASP customers will be able to securely connect to the Exchange server from a locally installed Outlook client in order to synchronise with handheld devices (phones and PDA's)

• Out of Office Reply - ASP users can set out of office replies which will fire on all e-mails received whether logged into TriSys ASP/Outlook or not.

• Real-time Blackberry and iPhone synchronisation - this allows synchronisation between TriSys ASP Outlook and Blackberry or iPhone hand-held devices.

The TriSys ASP service will in future be implementing technology to make additional use of the Windows Server System and complementary services such as instant messaging (IM) and Voice Over IP (VoIP).
